Rock Springs United Methodist Church roots go back to 1872 when religious services were held in a one room log building which was also used as a public school building. Religious services were held in this building, which was located close to the present church once a month. On April 5, 1878, during the pastorate of Rev. N Pruden, one and six-tenths of land was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. George D. Richardson for the sum of five dollars. The Rock Springs Episcopal Church South was officially organized in 1878 and a building erected on the property. The first Trustees were J. H. Wiles, George D. Richardson, T.H. Lester, John R Forbes and Thomas B. Fitzgerald.

Sunday school opening song was “Are You Staying?” Number 108. There were 8 Teachers and 28 scholars present and 13 absent. The scripture lesson was Acts 2 and the subject was “Paul going to Rome”. The weather was fair and the collection was .33 cents. The New Life Book was adopted as the music book for the session of the school. T.A. Clark announced three new scholars today. Bro. Kerns presented his bill for $7.50 for Sunday school supplies, which was allowed and the treasurer ordered to pay same. John R. Burgess, teacher for class 3 had the following scholars present: J.T. Walne, James E. Burton, Thomas Wolson, W. T Richardson, C. Earnest Burton, Oscar L. Dodson, Sammie Richardson. Absent: Gid M Wilson.
