Author William J. Cooper, Jr. will present “Governing the Confederacy.” A Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University, Doctor Cooper is a native of South Carolina who received his B.A. from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, where he also served as dean of the Graduate School from 1982 until 1989. He is highly regarded for his work related to President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. The emphasis of his Hildene lecture will be the role of states’ rights in the course of Confederate history. Cooper, who has authored numerous books and articles, was awarded the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and Jefferson Davis Award from the Museum of the Confederacy for Jefferson Davis, American: A Biography. William J. Cooper’s academic and scholarly achievements speak for themselves. He is eminently qualified to present on this topic. Hildene is pleased to host the professor for their second in the series of lectures related to the legacy of the nation’s 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Hildene’s Lincoln Lecture Series is part of a year long national celebration of the Lincoln Bicentennial marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of the “Great Emancipator.”
The Lincoln Lecture Series takes place on Saturdays monthly throughout the summer with presentations beginning at 10:00 am. Check in at the Welcome Center. Admission is $2.
