River Road in Stockbridge Vermont is currently a State roadrunning time:12:25 added by:vtwinemedia source: YouTubeThe flood waters from Tropical Storm Irene devastated roads all over Vermont, and travel through the town of Stockbridge was particularly hard hit. Vermont State Route 107 is expected to be out of commission until the end of the year. While locals deeply appreciate that River Road was put back into minimal working order by the state, with the help of Casella Construction, we are extremely concerned about the road situation going forward. Officially, the state is not making River Road the RT 107 detour to keep excess traffic off of it, but in reality, the road is seeing many times the normal level of transit. Conveniently enough, if it is not an official detour, then the State has no maintenance responsibility for the roadway, and that load falls on the shoulders of the Stockbridge tax base. Stockbridge has already been hit hard by this natural disaster, and has very limited resources with which to recover. The extra responsibility for maintaining a road that is carrying state traffic, puts an undue resource drain on this small town, which has little recourse for generating the revenue with which to pay for the work, and adds extra workload to the town's two person highway crew, who have other town roads to deal with as well. If anyone at the state level can please explain to us why this is the best course of action, and how Stockbridge should deal with this fiscal challenge on its own, we would greatly appreciate it.
