The Fundamentals of Watercolors: Skills Building - Kay Barnes

This fast paced workshop will focus on the basic skills all watercolorists need to effectively work with this medium. Brush handling and reading the wetness of the paper, the language of the brushstroke and selecting the proper water/paint ratio are the skills that we will concentrate on the first half of the workshop. Numerous exercises will reinforce these skills. Color wheel and color mixing are also essential areas to work on to build confidence and understanding of this medium. The importance of creating solid values is also emphasized. Some of the approaches to painting we will explore are wet into wet, direct method, wet on dry and dry brush. Basic washes and modeling forms are also key areas we will cover. Exercises will be offered to teach some tried and true techniques for creating textures such as scraping, stencils, stamping, salt, spattering, etc. By the end of this workshop, students will have been exposed to a solid base of instruction in watercolor approaches and techniques that will give them the knowledge to execute more successful watercolors.
