Mariners Care Tops $1 Million in Charitable Giving for 2008
Over $9.89 million raised in past 9 years for NW Charities

Mariners Care, the Seattle Mariners non-profit foundation, and its corporate partners, helped provide $1,022,829 in 2008 for a variety of charitable programs throughout the Northwest. This is the ninth consecutive year that Mariners Care has surpassed $1 million in charitable giving. Since 2000, Mariners Care has helped raise $9.89 million to benefit primarily youth-oriented community service programs.

"We take our responsibility to the community very seriously at the Seattle Mariners. I'm proud that Mariners Care, our corporate partners and our fans have helped make such a positive and lasting impact on our community," said Howard Lincoln, Mariners Chair and CEO.

During 2008, Mariners Care and the Mariners corporate partners supported over 1,500 local organizations including Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program, Puget Sound Blood Center, and Seattle Children's Hospital. Additionally, every Mariners player participated in and supported various community programs and causes.

Mariners Care 2008 Highlights

Cystic Fibrosis Mariners Care Golf Tournament
Over $191,000 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the annual golf tournament and auction.

Mariners Care Community Section and Commissioner's Initiative for Children
Through the Mariners Care Community Section and the Commissioner's Initiative for Children, thousands of children had the chance to attend a Seattle Mariners home game. This year's contribution totaled $150,000.

Boeing Mariners Care Athletic Field Grant
Since 1985, a partnership between The Boeing Company and the Mariners provides a grant of $100,000 to improve youth baseball fields in the community. This year's recipient was the City of Des Moines for the Des Moines Field House Park Renovation Project.

PACCAR "RBIs for Literacy"

For every Mariners RBI during the 2008 season, PACCAR is donating $100 to the Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program. This second year program raised $75,000.

Mariners Care Silent Auctions
Held each Saturday home game at Safeco Field, silent auctions of autographed memorabilia raised $74,595 for Mariners Care.

Seattle Mariners "Groundskeeper for A Day" Fundraising Program
More than $72,000 has been raised this season for Pacific Northwest charities through the "Groundskeeper for a Day" donations offered at various auctions.

Peoria Diamond Club Annual Spring Training Charity Game
The annual Spring Training Charity Game between the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres raised $58,128. Beneficiaries included youth based organizations such as Girl Scouts, Hope Kids, Homeward Bound, Boys and Girls Clubs and Foundation for Blind Children, as well as local schools, summer camps, food banks and American Cancer Society.

Seattle Children's Hospital Wishing Well
Thanks to donations, a generous match by Wizards of the Coast and coins collected in the Wishing Well on the Main Concourse in center field at Safeco Field, $26,000 has been donated to Seattle Children's to benefit Pacific Northwest patients and families.

Microsoft "K's for Education"
For every strikeout recorded by a Mariners pitcher, Microsoft donates $25 to Boys and Girls Clubs of King County. The 2008 total is $25,400.

Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities
The Mariners joined together with Major League Baseball and the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County to support the 14th season of the Seattle R.B.I. League for inner-city boys and girls. The 2008 contribution totaled $25,000.

Mariners Wives Benefit for First Place School

Selling mystery grab bags of baseballs autographed by Mariners players and coaches raised $23,000 for First Place, which provides education and services for children who are homeless or in transition.

PACCAR Page Ahead Book Drives
Two book drives during the 2008 series netted $21,062 in books and cash donations for Page Ahead, a children's literacy program in Washington state.

Mariners-Nikon Social Responsibility Program

Nikon and the Mariners provided select Puget Sound area elementary schools with the opportunity to attend a Mariners game and receive new digital cameras for use in their creative arts programs. The digital cameras and ticket donations, valued at $17,000, benefited students at 13 different schools.

Central Garden and Pet Canine Companions for Independence Mariners Pet Calendar
For every Mariners pet calendar that is sold this year, Central Garden and Pet makes a donation to CCI, a program that provides service dogs to people with disabilities. In 2008, the calendars raised over $18,321. The project raised over $32,000 since August 2007.

Trader Joe's Home Run Program
Trader Joe's made a donation to the Food Bank at St. Mary's for each home run hit over 350 feet by a Mariners player. In 2008, the total was $15,000.

Mariners Wives Favorite Things Auction
A silent auction of baskets filled with the favorite things of Mariners players and manager raised $14,500 to benefit Meany Middle School Arts Initiative and Children of the Nations, a non-profit that provides assistance to orphaned children in Africa and the Caribbean.

Puget Sound Blood Center Doubles for Research
Every time a Mariners player hit a double at Safeco Field this season, the Mariners made a donation to help fund research at the Puget Sound Blood Center. The 2008 total is $14,250.

Charity Auction Ticket Donations
In 2008, the Mariners contributed $12,820 in tickets for charity auctions and fundraisers throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Fidelity Investments "Home Runs that Help"
For every homerun hit by a Seattle Mariners player, Fidelity Investments donates $100 to Seattle Children's Hospital. This year, the Mariners belted 124 homers for a total donation of $12,400.

Verizon Wireless Refuse to Abuse

For every Mariners win, Verizon Wireless donated $200 to the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In 2008, the Mariners won 61 games for a total donation of $12,200.

Les Schwab Mariners Care Speed Pitch
Located in the Bullpen Market, all proceeds from the interactive fan game are donated to the Mariners Care Foundation. The season ending total is $12,000.

Mariners Wives "Birthdays from the Ballpark"
In 2008, sales of the Mariners Wives cookbook, Birthdays from the Ballpark, have generated $9,541 in proceeds, which will benefit the Seattle Children's Uncompensated Care program.

Pepsi Partners
Five Seattle area restaurants (Ibiza Dinner Club, Sazerac, Las Margaritas, Salty's Seafood Grills, Duke's Chowder House) donated a portion of the proceeds from every Pepsi purchased during the baseball season. The program netted $7,500 for Mariners Care.

Strike Out Hunger Presented by KOMO 1000 News and Mariners Care
This annual food drive collected $7,000 in cash donations and 1,000 pounds of food for Northwest Harvest.

Fidelity Investments Inspire the Future Award

Fidelity Investments and the Mariners honored six individuals dedicated to the advancement of youth baseball in the Northwest and a $1,000 donation was given to each honoree's youth baseball program for a total contribution of $6,000 for local youth baseball and softball programs.

Schuck's Auto Supply Bring 'em Home Safe

Each time the Seattle Mariners scored the first run in a game, Schuck's donated a car seat to Seattle Children's and the Injury Free Coalition for Kids. In 2008, over $5,720 of car seats were contributed.

Baseball Tomorrow Fund and Major League Baseball Equipment Collection
Fans donated over $5,000 worth of new and gently used baseball and softball equipment to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County.

HairMasters "Make Me Over"
Fans donated $5 to Mariners Care in exchange for a haircut from a HairMasters stylist. During three different "Make Me Over" haircutting promotions this season at the ballpark, 799 haircuts were given and a grand total of $4,166 was raised for Mariners Care.

Catch a Cure for Cancer Silent Auction
On September 10, the Mariners hosted a silent auction at Safeco Field to benefit The Moyer Foundation's Catch a Cure for Cancer campaign supporting early cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The auction raised $3,726 for the 2008 campaign.

Mariner Moose Auction Donations
More than $3,000 has been raised this season for Pacific Northwest charities through Mariner Moose party donations offered at various auctions.

Kikkoman Tailgate for Mariners Care
Prior to the September 6th game, Kikkoman invited fans to sample the Teriyaki Takumi Collection. While there, fans were asked to sign a Check for Charity and Kikkoman donated $1,500 to Mariners Care on behalf of the fans signatures.
