Attendance at Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMP|SFM) is up 13 percent from the beginning of the year; and the museum has welcomed 5,836 new members to the museum in the last 12 months. As a result, EMP|SFM will extend their hours, and be open seven days a week from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., effective September 4. Previously, the museum had been closed on Tuesdays following Labor Day.
“Summer attendance at EMP|SFM has been outstanding!” said Josi Callan, CEO of EMP|SFM. “We can attribute these tremendous numbers to a growing membership base—attracted by our new emphasis on family programming; beginning our community access program—All Access Nights at EMP|SFM; and offering our visitors a lower ticket price.”
In November 2006, EMP|SFM began offering a newly priced family membership. The Disney Family Membership, priced at $75, was launched in conjunction with the opening of Disney: The Music Behind the Magic. The exhibition closes on September 9, 2007 and the current Disney Family Membership offer will expire the same day. Beginning in 2008, Disney: The Music Behind the Magic will travel for a three-year period to various venues, which may include Vancouver, Chicago and China.
In January of this year, the museum launched All Access Nights, sponsored by The Boeing Company, at EMP|SFM, where the first Thursday evening of every month from 5-8 p.m. admission to the museum is free. To date, 16,472 guests have visited the museum on All Access Nights at EMP|SFM. August’s All Access Night had a record 3,355 guests.
In March, EMP|SFM’s ticket price was lowered putting the admission cost in line with other museums and attractions in the area. Tickets are now $15 for adults and $12 for seniors, youth and students and military personnel with ID. Children under 5 are free.
This fall, the museum will open two new exhibitions organized by EMP|SFM: American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, is the first major museum exhibition to explore the significant contributions of Latino artists in the American soundscape. The bilingual exhibition will open October 13, 2007 and run through September 7, 2008 at EMP|SFM.
Innersphere: Sculptural Works by Rik Allen will open on November 17, 2007 and run through April 25, 2008 at EMP|SFM. This exhibition of works by Washington artist Rik Allen features glass and metal sculpture inspired by his life-long fascination with technology and science fiction.
Since EMP opened in 2000 and SFM in 2004, EMP|SFM has welcomed more than 3.6 million visitors through its doors.
