Northwest Folklife, a cultural arts organization located in Seattle, WA, is seeking a new Executive Director.
The 37 year-old non-profit organization creates opportunities for individuals and communities of the Pacific Northwest to celebrate, share and sustain the vitality of folk, ethnic and traditional arts for present and future generations. It fulfills its mission in a variety of ways, most notably through the annual production of the free Northwest Folklife Festival. Northwest Folklife focuses on traditional, participatory and noncommercial arts and is open to emerging folk arts and the interests of its audience and local communities.

The Executive Director of Northwest Folklife is responsible for the overall management of an organization with an annual budget of $2.6 million ($1.6 million cash, $1 million in-kind) and a 12 person staff composed of full and part time employees. The free annual Northwest Folklife Festival, held each year for four days on Memorial Day weekend at the Seattle Center, includes thousands of volunteers and performers.

The position requires an executive with the experience and capacity to provide leadership in working with board and staff. A background in arts management and an understanding of traditional and contemporary folk arts would be a definite asset. The ability to participate fully in strategic planning, fundraising, budgeting and financial management is necessary. Candidates should have experience in leading a dynamic organization as it charts a course that retains its best elements while improving programmatic and organizational strategies. Applicants should have experience in effectively coordinating professional and volunteer resources. Experience in communications with the public, government agencies and members of diverse local communities is vital.

CANDIDATE’S PACKAGE:
Candidates for the position of Executive Director should submit a resume, three professional references and a brief (no longer than three pages) letter of intent. The letter of intent should speak succinctly to each of five points:
1. Challenges and achievements in working with Boards of Directors.
2. Level of sophistication in cash flow management.
3. Experience implementing policies and strategic plans.
4. Capacity to manage relationships with diverse stakeholders.
5. Fund development successes.

Compensation for the Executive Director position at Northwest Folklife: $80,000, with some negotiation possible based on qualifications.
Health insurance is provided through Group Health of Puget Sound.
A 2% retirement match is currently available.
Paid time off which includes illness, vacation and leave, is available to employees of Northwest Folklife.
