Latvian Art: Past And Present
from:Nordic Heritage Museum category:Arts and Entertainment posted:October 4th, 2008Latvia declared its independence on November 18, 1918. This year the Latvians are commemorating the 90th anniversary of Latvia’s independence and as part of this celebration there will be an exhibit of Latvian art at the Nordic Heritage Museum, from October 14 through November 9, 2008. This
exhibit will include approximately 40 oil paintings, on loan from private collections, that represent Latvia’s early period, 1900 through 1945, and the post 1945 period including current works by Latvian-American artists.
Artists in the early on period evolved the Latvian identity of land and its people. The next generation of artist with a broader exposure to new forms of artistic expression from Europe, adapted these stylistic innovations fusing them with their own cultural heritage. With the art world in turmoil during and following World War II, much of Latvian art also changed as it incorporated themes and ideas from the new surroundings of the post-war era.
This exhibit is a small sample of works created by Latvian artists, but it does provide a view of the spectrum of paintings over a 100 year period. This will be the first time all of these works have been exhibited in the Northwest as a group.
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 4 and 12 to 4 on Sunday.
