PCNW Welcomes, Our New Executive Director, Annie Van Avery

from:Photographic Center Northwest category:Arts and Entertainment posted:May 11th, 2008

It is my pleasure to be joining Photographic Center Northwest as the Executive Director. As an arts administrator, photographer, and educator, I have been interested in the work of the organization for a number of years. Having lived and participated in photographic communities in Minneapolis, San Francisco, Vermont, Baltimore, and New York, my perception of PCNW was that the organization was one of a handful of premier educational centers in the nation promoting the photographic arts. I am honored to be a part of the sustainability, growth, and evolution of PCNW.

In an extensive and thoughtful interview process, the PCNW community challenged the candidates to envision the future of the organization on both a practical and visionary level. The organization's challenges and potential were discussed, allowing us to consider the role that we may play in leading the organization to the next level. By experiencing this process it became clear that PCNW has a dedicated community invested in the organization's success. There is a history of quality educational and exhibition offerings as well as facilities. The groundwork and a committed team are in place. It is an ideal time to build a vision of PCNW's future.

Although I am just beginning to transition into the role of Executive Director, I am excited by the possibilities for this future. In more practical terms, there are a number of larger goals that I envision focusing on during my tenure including:

- Identifying PCNW's position in the national sphere of photography

- Evaluating and developing our programs and exhibitions in a way that places PCNW in the role of an educational and cultural leader

- Building our financial infrastructure to support progressive long-term planning and sustainability

These are ambitious goals and will take leadership and time to achieve, however I do not believe that they are unrealistic with the unified dedication of the PCNW community. Thank you for warmly welcoming me. I see us all in the role of being ambassadors for PCNW and invite you to be in touch with your ideas and contributions.
