Vision Paris w/Claire Garoutte
September 1-10,2008
Spend ten days in Paris, discovering your personal photographic vision as you explore the City of Lights. Start with the principles of seeing photographically: perspective, quality of light, element of time, and visual emphasis. Enjoy the insider’s tour of the city, as Claire Garoutte leads daily walks through the street of Paris. Refine your photographic vision with group critiques and discussion; Claire will also help students with portfolio development. A Projects and Goals class will be offered at PCNW in the fall quarter, if you wish to continue printing and editing your work from this workshop.
Thailand Through the Lens w/Patricia Ridenour
January 26-February 8,2009
In this new and exciting travel workshop offering, PCNW faculty member Patricia Ridenour will lead students on a 14-day tour through Thailand, revealing an amazing country full of rich visual imagery. She will be teaching travel photography from every aspect of the medium - portraiture, landscape, fine art and architecture to still life, dance, editorial, and night photography. Patricia is passionate about helping photographers find their unique visual voice and take their work to the next level. She will discuss concept, light, exposure, composition, color temperature, and how to be ready for the decisive moment. An itinerary designed to maximize site access for best light and model releases obtained from professional Thai dancers are among the examples of how this workshop has been designed with the photographer in mind. This workshop has been designed in collaboration with Imprint Tours: visit their website at www.imprinttours.com for a full itinerary and detailed workshop information.
Looking ahead towards fall? Fall quarter 2008 begins Wednesday, September 24th. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for our fall schedule, to be posted later this summer.

Patricia Ridenour,
PCNW faculty member and instructor for our upcoming travel workshop
Thailand Through the Lens,
speaks about her experiences abroad:
I woke just before dawn, leaving the guesthouse with little more than my cameras and a quick cafecito in my belly. There was no specific destination in mind just the crisp air and beautiful light of the early morning hours in Cusco. Walking from our barrio of Santiago towards the central market, I watched groups of women talking excitedly over tarps full of carne, naranjas, hierbas sharing cups of tea as their breath rose like collective smoke. Walking on through quiet cobblestone streets, I felt the polished stone beneath my feet and meditated on the centuries lived in those narrow calles and the hidden courtyards beyond.
As the sun rose higher, shadows and silhouettes played on the streets and the surrounding walls. I reveled in the shifting light and its illuminated figures. With each quiet click of its shutter, my old Canonet rangefinder paid tribute to this peaceful space and the visions realized within. Exploring the path on a literal and symbolic level, this workshop opened a space within which to question and refine my artistic process. A space to reconnect with this deep and lasting desire to translate a visual understanding of moments captured within the frame of a 35mm negative...
