The Seattle Public Library and MIT Present 'Trash Track' Exhibit

The Seattle Public Library and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are teaming up to show Seattleites where their trash goes in an exhibit, “MIT SENSEable Cities Lab Trash Track Project,” scheduled at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 5. The opening of the exhibit will feature a program with MIT researchers from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 in at the Central Library, Microsoft Auditorium, Level 1. The researchers will explain the Trash Track Project. Following the program, there will be a reception from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The exhibit and program are free and open to the public. No registration is required. Parking for the program will be available in the Central Library garage for a $5 special event rate. At other times, parking for the exhibit will be available in the Central Library garage at normal rates.

Researchers from MIT were in Seattle tagging trash last month. The trash migration patterns will be featured as part of the Central Library exhibit, using a combination of computer-generated displays and photography. The data from and analysis of the study will help researchers better understand the implications of the garbage stream and the effects and costs of recycling. The information will also be available online.
