Mission:

As a resident professional theater company, Tacoma Actors Guild (TAG) is dedicated to producing a broad spectrum of high quality contemporary and classical dramatic works, emphasizing language-driven, ensemble productions. TAG seeks to achieve its professional productions in a grassroots climate of participation and inclusion across all segments of our community.

History:

In 1976, University of Puget Sound Professor Rick Tutor started a summer season of productions at the Inside Theatre on the school's campus. Two successful summer seasons led to the founding of Tacoma Actors Guild in March 1978 by Professor Tutor, William Becvar (a drama professor at Pacific Lutheran University), and a dedicated contingent of theater enthusiasts. The company’s first production, a four performance run of "Guys and Dolls," was a terrific success. Following "Guys and Dolls," TAG produced two children’s shows in the summer of 1979 and then began its first full season in its then-permanent home at St. Leo’s School on Yakima Avenue.

In 1989, a group of representatives from the City of Tacoma, the arts community and the downtown business sector developed a plan to build a new performance facility for Tacoma Actors Guild, and thereby create an anchor for downtown’s theater district. Collaborative efforts secured over $11 million to renovate two existing performance spaces and to build the new Theatre On The Square, TAG’s performance home since the 1993-94 Season.
