Tacoma Philharmonic
A devotion to music since 1933
The year was 1933, the height of the Great Depression. One in four Americans was out of work and 9,000 banks were failing. 21 year-old conductor Eugene Linden called auditions for a new symphony orchestra in Tacoma and only three musicians heeded the call.
Mr. Linden was satisfied: "No musicians would have been a failure, three is a beginning!" In January 1934 the 67 member Tacoma Philharmonic Orchestra performed its first concert at the Jason Lee Auditorium. The evening opened with Felix Mendelssohn's nearly forgotten but noble Overture Ruy Blas.
Seven decades later, the Tacoma Philharmonic continues to inspire audiences - no longer as a symphony orchestra - but as a presenter of the finest orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo artists from around the world. We invite you to join the 70th Anniversary Celebration - experience World Class Classical Music in the heart of Tacoma.
