The newest art display in the Washington State University Vancouver library gallery is a group of oil paintings by Leslie Cote.
Cote is a local artist who has shown in the Aurora Gallery, the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, and the YWCA. In her current body of work she explores her ancestral heritage with images of people in Africa. The show runs until July 11.
Cote uses a soft color pallet. In a number of pieces she pairs a cool yellow with a pale blue. The colors create a calm, soothing feel to images of people busy shopping, dancing, working and making music. Six of the paintings in the exhibition are small in scale. Even in the smaller works Cote's paintings include many minute details, but the faces of the people remain non-descript leaving the viewer to interpret the emotions of the figures.
Entry to campus exhibits is free. WSU Vancouver Library is open Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
