Mission:

To enhance the quality of life in Southwest Washington by providing symphonic music of the highest caliber in live performances and through music education in the schools the concert halls and throughout the community.

History:

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra evolved from a twenty member ensemble of area musicians. In 1972, to reflect growth in membership and performance they began calling themselves the Vancouver Chamber Orchestra and later the Vancouver Community Orchestra (VCO).

Its young conductor Larry Hirtzel, not unlike Dr. Brotons, began his music studies at a very early age under the guidance of his father, Robert Hirtzel Sr., a world class violinist and respected string teacher in the Vancouver School District. Larry led the group of local musicians, that included his father, Colleen Tolva, as well as Walt Cleland and family, plus other prominent Vancouver musicians, for several years the group averaged four complete symphonic concerts a season.

After the 1978 Season Larry turned The Vancouver Community Orchestra’s baton and music library over to Walt Cleland who embraced the organization that called themselves the Silver Strings and later the Symphonette. Under Walt Cleland’s direction and encouragement the group continued to grow. Eventually they re named themselves the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Brotons has been the Vancouver Symphony’s music director and conductor since.
