Born in Milwaukee and living in Minneapolis, Lisa Fifield draws on her native Oneida culture to paint in watercolor the folk tales that place women at the heart of tribal life. Wisconsin was the second home to the Oneida, an Iroquoisc-speaking community whose original homeland was in what is now central New York. Starting over in Wisconsin, the Oneida suffered tremendous losses but, against the odds, have remained strong in their tribal identity. In the tradition of all storytellers, Fifield seeks to keep cultural memories alive by retelling the old tales in her own way. Her images resuscitate fading clan myths that honor women as the center of the life cycle and the keepers of tribal mythology.
