Tips for Ice Skating in County
- While you don't have to be the most graceful skater at the rink to have a great time, beginners may want to get some idea of how to move to avoid a fall. Learn the basics.
- Keep your head up and your knees bent. This keeps your weight forward, a good thing since leaning backwards is the surest way to take a spill. Plus, if you fall forward, you'll land on your hands, not your head.
- Get comfortable taking small steps on the ice. Eventually you'll be able to transition to a glide. Work on transferring your weight from one foot to the other while pushing your weight through the balls of the foot.
- With proper safety precautions and gear (like helmets), children as young as three or four can start learning the basics of skating. True newbies may find it helpful to push a chair as they advance, with supervision, of course.
If all else fails, relax -- it's perfectly fine to hang on to the side of the rink.
