While you don't have to be the most graceful skater at the rink to have a great time, beginners may want to get some idea of how to move to avoid a fall. Learn the basics.
Keep your head up and your knees bent. This keeps your weight forward, a good thing since leaning backwards is the surest way to take a spill. Plus, if you fall forward, you'll land on your hands, not your head.
Get comfortable taking small steps on the ice. Eventually you'll be able to transition to a glide. Work on transferring your weight from one foot to the other while pushing your weight through the balls of the foot.
With proper safety precautions and gear (like helmets), children as young as three or four can start learning the basics of skating. True newbies may find it helpful to push a chair as they advance, with supervision, of course.

If all else fails, relax -- it's perfectly fine to hang on to the side of the rink.
