Diabetes Education Class

When you understand more about your diabetes, you can better control your disease and prevent complications. Diabetes education includes information about diabetes detection, treatment and self-management.

What to Expect

If you do not already have diabetes, learning about the disease can help to prevent it or lessen its impact. If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, learning the best ways to manage it can help prevent complications.

Our certified diabetes educators, which include dietitians and nurses with specialized training in diabetes care and education, specialize in:

-Type 1 and type 2 diabetes
-Gestational diabetes (diabetes that occurs during pregnancy)
-Insulin management and pump therapy
-Pre-diabetes and diabetes prevention

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes affects more than 30 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of the population. Of these individuals, about 1.25 million adults and children have type 1 diabetes and some 7.2 million are undiagnosed.

How Can Diabetes Education Help:

Managing your diabetes is a delicate balance of proper food and exercise choices, medication management and coping skills. Our educators partner with you, your family and your doctor to help you tailor a program just for your form of diabetes. Education includes:

-Coping with your feelings about having diabetes
-Understanding diabetes medicines and how they work
-Healthy food choices and meal planning
-How and when to monitor your blood sugar
-Value of physical activity
-Preventing complications and overcoming barriers of care

If you already have diabetes, you probably understand that your life has changed. Education can help you to maintain your quality of life and overcome any obstacles you may be encountering. If you do not yet have the disease, but have a family history of diabetes, or believe you may be at risk, getting tested and learning all about it will help you be way ahead of the game. Diabetes is an individual condition, but you don’t have to manage it alone.
