Featuring ceramics and works on paper from over twenty years of her practice, Annabeth Rosen: Fired, Broken, Gathered, Heaped is the first major survey of the artist’s work, and the first to be shown in her home base of Northern California. The exhibition’s title draws inspiration from Rosen’s art-making process, while also embracing the simultaneous fragility and strength that can be found in her works.
Annabeth Rosen is a pioneer in the field of contemporary ceramics. Originally trained as a tilemaker, Rosen’s sculptures dramatically depart from the purely decorative or functional aspects of the ceramic tradition, instead embracing the precariousness of the medium itself. Using a bold and additive process, Rosen reconfigures small, organic—sometimes broken—clay forms into monumental objects. Playful and antic, Rosen’s works celebrate her relentless curiosity for creating and re-creating, encompassing both destruction and rebirth.
Annabeth Rosen: Fired, Broken, Gathered, Heaped is organized by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and was curated by CAMH’s former Senior Curator Valerie Cassel Oliver. It is organized at The CJM by Chief Curator, Renny Pritikin and Curator, Heidi Rabben.
