Exhibition - Impressions of My Year in Painting

Tuesday, Dec 10, 2019 from 10:00am to 7:00pm

Take a virtual trip to Boston, the North Shore and Star Island in New Hampshire with watercolor artist Margaret “Peggy” Poppe as she captures scenes throughout the year in her latest exhibition on display during November and December at Carry Out Cafe & Catering in Newburyport.

“I saw some of Peggy’s art at an event on Plum Island last year and knew that it was a perfect fit for our gallery,” said Paula Simpson, owner of Carry Out Cafe & Catering. “Her work is so peaceful and meditative. It transports you right to the location.”

“Painting allows me to truly see the world in a way that I often miss as a casual observer in every day life – for example, the many colors in nature and how light and shadows give objects form,” Poppe said. When she is painting, Poppe reports “I am able to let go of my thoughts and worries and be fully present in the moment with whatever I am observing and the painting itself.”

Poppe and her husband moved to Plum Island about seven years ago from Burlington, VT, where she worked as a nurse educator and consultant in public health. She has been painting for the past 20 years, mostly on summer vacations in Maine, but now pursues her artistic endeavors daily.

A member of the Newburyport Art Association and active in the Watercolor Group, Poppe's art has been included in many juried shows. She has honed her talent by learning from a number of painting teachers, including Lee Boynton, Gary Tucker, Alan Bull, and Susan Spellman. Currently, she teaches watercolor painting at the Country Center for Health and Rehabilitation and the Newburyport Senior Community Center.

Poppe enjoys painting en plein aire (in the open air) when the weather allows as well as from photographs of the scenery. “I prefer to paint outside, which allows me to experience the environment – the sun or mist, the smells, and the sounds that surround me. Much of my inspiration is drawn from coastal New England landscapes, such as marshes, dunes, ocean and river views and harbors,” she added.

The watercolors on display at Carry Out Cafe are available for purchase, along with cards and 2020 calendars. Please contact Julie Cook at julie@cookbowe.com or the artist directly.
