Lola lvarez Bravo: Picturing Mexico

This exhibition presents some fifty photographs by Mexican photographer, artist, curator, activist, and educator Lola Alvarez Bravo, focusing on the 1930s to the 1970s, when Alvarez Bravo traveled across the country documenting post revolutionary Mexico. Many of the photographs, including incisive portraits of her fellow artists and lesser known compositions that emphasize abstract form, pattern, and the play of light and shadow, are from what she thought of as her personal artistic practice, and show Bravo to be at the center of the country’s modernist wave. Moreover, her pictures of people at work and at leisure, of buildings new and old, and a diverse array of landscapes, bring to life an era of profound transformation from the perspective of one of Mexico’s pioneering female photographers. This exhibition is curated by Stephanie Weissberg, Assistant Curator at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.
