Mike Childs' 100 Words is an exhibition of paintings tied to the idea of abstraction as a substitute for language. As a dyslexic struggling to find words for expression, Childs implements color, geometric shapes and patterns to express his own vocabulary. The paintings in 100 Words were created sequentially and act as a journal for the artist. Each painting is a description of architecture, travel and landscape. This series represents meaningful elements of speech or writing that have been translated into a visual linguistics, brought forth with bright color washes and honeycomb structured patterns reflecting the artist's interest in bee society.
Mike Childs received his BFA from University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and an MFA from Florida State University in Tallahassee. In 1992, Childs received the Florence study award from FSU to study painting in Italy. He has participated in several group shows in the tristate area: ALJIRA in Newark, NJ; University of Bridgeport in Connecticut; and Hudson Beach Glass in Beacon, NY. He is the recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant and a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Project Award. He currently lives and works in the Bronx, New York. Childs is represented by Robert Henry Contemporary.
