Exhibition: RetroBlakesberg: Captured on Film, 1978-2008

Saturday, Nov 26, 2022 from 11:00am to 5:00pm

In 1978 with a borrowed Pentax camera in hand, Jay Blakesberg began not just a photography career, but a journey of creativity and discovery. RetroBlakesberg: Captured on Film, 1978–2008 explores his work on film as he traveled across the nation and captured key moments in music history. Visitors are invited to experience this rich photography exhibit featuring artists from every genre, spanning several generations, captured by the extraordinary Jay Blakesberg.

This first solo museum exhibition of Jay Blakesberg’s photography spreads across four galleries in the Morris Museum and tells the story of the artist’s rising career and the evolution of music and fashion. Themes in each gallery are pulled from his latest book, RetroBlakesberg (Rock Out Books, forthcoming 2022) and weave together a visual narrative that music fans are sure to love.

Explore Jay Blakesberg’s earliest photographs from high school and college, in the gallery exploring how the New Jersey native first charted his career path. Photographs of the Grateful Dead that richly influenced Blakesberg’s career fill the hall gallery, with images of Deadheads and the Grateful Dead transporting the visitor to a time of psychedelic revelry.

Blakesberg’s instinctive ability to translate the personality and soul of an artist into a photograph is evident in his live performance photography. Featuring music legends alongside punk rock and alternative greats, this dedicated gallery transports the viewer to the very moment when the images were captured on film. In the final portrait gallery, rock and roll giants, psychedelic icons, and famed alternative and punk rock bands coalesce, bound together by their shared love of music and Blakesberg’s incomparable ability convey their ineffable qualities in still frames.

This exhibition was Curated by Ricki and Jay Blakesberg alongside Michelle Graves, Assistant Curator at the Morris Museum.
