5:30pm: La Bamba

Join The Mexican Museum to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Latinx Icons of American History with the screening of La Bamba, the 1987 Ritchie Valens biopic at the FORT MASON FLIX pop-up movie plaza. The Ensambles Ballet Folklorico de San Francisco (Mexican dance group) performs during the screening pre-show!

Richard Steven Valenzuela (Lou Diamond Phillips) is a normal teenage boy who becomes a rock ‘n’ roll superstar under the stage name Ritchie Valens. He meets and falls in love with fellow high school student Donna Ludwig (Danielle von Zerneck), for whom he wrote a song that became a number two hit (“Donna”). However, Donna’s father is shown as having issues with his daughter dating a Mexican American, which causes friction between Ritchie and Donna. The movie also has several subplots, such as his relationship with his mother Connie Valenzuela (Rosana DeSoto) and half-brother Bob Morales (Esai Morales), and the jealousy Bob felt toward Ritchie because of Ritchie’s success.

8:30pm - 10:45pm: 12 Monkeys (1995)
A lone time traveler from the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save his people … but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of The Fisher King. After the world’s population is devastated by a killer virus, survivors must live in dank underground communities. Cole (Willis) “volunteers” to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he crosses paths with a beautiful psychiatrist (Stowe) and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient (Pitt). But the race is on, as Cole searches for The Army of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease. With unforgettable performances and imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern-day classic laced with Gilliam’s trademark wit and dazzling visual style.
