Are you fascinated by owls? Do you enjoy a good old fashioned New England winter morning before sunrise? If so, these walks scheduled during hours of peak owl activity may be for you. Winter is a great time to observe owls which nest earlier than most birds, and are vocal on an otherwise quiet, dormant landscape. Screech, great horned, and barred owls are the most common species, and each breed at or near the Lloyd Center property. This year we offer two dates for this popular event so you’re sure not to miss out.
Focusing on the Lloyd Center woodlands, we’ll attempt to attract, hear, and see owls. Other local stops will be visited depending on our luck at the Lloyd Center. To close out the walk, we’ll head down to Gooseberry and Horseneck to view a spectacular sunrise before checking for a snowy owl which in most years winter at these sites, in addition to other winter bird life. Back at the Lloyd Center, enjoy an encounter with Koko, our resident eastern screech owl. For those longing to see a live owl (and knowing seeing a wild owl is no guarantee) this is a treat!
On this first prowl and given the recent trend of mild winters, has the cold fully set in? Has any snow fallen? Are we in a January thaw? Regardless of landscape conditions, somewhere in the night lurks a sleepy but alert owl sure to respond to calls, and if it’s a snowy owl year, we’re well within the time-frame for their presence down on the beach.
Items to bring include a flashlight, camera, binoculars, and footwear for light walking on forest trails and possibly snow. (Individuals with spotlights are urged to bring them).
Masks are required to participate in this event. Proper social distancing will also be employed.
Note: Stormy weather or excessively windy conditions will cause postponement. Participants must drive their own vehicle to local owl viewing locations.
