Introduce balance in children's lives in the Marblehead School of Ballet's new class, Mindful Kids, for Children, from ages 4 - 6, may enroll in the class. Parking is available in the lot behind the studio and on the street.

Through story telling, animal imagery, and the use of puppets, stuffed animals, and Tibetan chimes, instructor Leda Elliott teaches simple Tai Chi and Qi Gong movements, meditation, and self-regulation skills customized for children's needs. No previous experience is needed. "Leda uses the power of imagery, sounds and Tai Chi and Qi Gong movements to teach self-regulation skills and enhance calm listening skills in young children," said Paula K. Shiff, director, Marblehead School of Ballet.

Cultivate Harmony and Balance in Children

Elliott, who recently joined the school's faculty teaching a new Tai Chi and Qi Gong class for teens and adults, identified the cultivation of children's harmony and balance in Mindful Kids. "Learning self-regulation skills through these gentle and calming exercises helps children focus better and manage stress and emotions at home and at school. Tai Chi movements inherently promote harmony and balance of the mind and body, said Elliot.

"Children develop internal and external body awareness, enhance mindful listening skill and learn skills to be in harmony with their surroundings. Without being consciously aware of the benefits of the movements, the children will naturally experience them," she said.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, Elliott has taught children of all ages in various settings, including private schools, hospitals, and after school programs in the Boston and Cambridge area. She is a master level instructor of the Tai Chi Arts Association and Wushu Research Institute, and she has represented the association and institute by offering demonstrations, workshops and classes nationally and internationally.

Her unique experiences include extensive studies, performances and competitions in dance and the martial arts of Chinese Wushu, as well as the healing arts of Qi Gong and Reiki. Elliott's dance training was undertaken at The Ballet Arts of Carnegie Hall in Japan under Aiko Ohtaki, one of the first females to teach ballet in Japan, and at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, Massachusetts.
