Kala is excited to present Missy Whiteman: Anthology of Short Films on Friday, September 30, 7pm at Kala Gallery. Missy received a 2020 McKnight Fellowship for Media Arts and is one of three McKnight Fellows to be in residence at Kala this past year.  Kala is one of 16 sites participating in the McKnight Artist Residencies through the Artist Communities Alliance – who led a series of amazing values-driven workshops designed to support artist-centered experiences. We are so honored to host Missy at Kala!

Missy Whiteman, Northern Arapaho and Kickapoo filmmaker/Interdisciplinary artist presents an evening of life in art through moving images.

Missy Whiteman (Northern Arapaho and Kickapoo), an Emmy nominated writer, director, producer, interdisciplinary publiX artist and curator.  Whiteman understands her work to be a voice for her ancestors, their stories and ancestral wisdom.

While based in part Indigenous traditional practices and perspectives, her work also addresses themes of historical genocide, loss of culture, and land in relation to colonization and healing though the creative process. Missy connects life, death, spirit world and the rebirth process through restorative activation of spirit, DNA memory, language and cultural revitalization.

Many of Missy’s films have screened at international, national, and local venues such as The Walker Art Center, National Geographic All Roads Festival and Bilabo Spain.  Whiteman is currently a Sundance Interdisciplinary: Art of Practice Fellow as well as the Hennepin Theatre Trust/All My Relations Digital Public Arts Fellow. 

Past fellowships, 2020 McKnight Fellowship for Media Arts2020 Forecast Public Art Mid-Career fellowship 2020The Sundance Native Lab Fellowship and Jerome Fellowship for her short film project The Coyote Way: Going Back Home.

Her current project, The Coyote Way X: Expanded Cinema is a multidimensional cinematic experience of The Coyote Way: Going Back Home short film intertwined with performance, live score, video mapping and 360/VR.
