One of the most memorable images in American history, this World War I U.S. Army recruiting poster, by noted illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, depicts Uncle Sam urging young men to enlist in the war effort. Judie Butterfield will present a program about posters at the Arts Council’s 3rdthursdaynoon series on September 19.

“Posters: Art that Persuades, Informs, and Recruits” will offer a history of posters and how they reflect events, attitudes, and national goals. Examples will be shown of how artful posters invite consumers to purchase a wide variety of goods and services, attend special events, adopt healthy attitudes, or travel to exotic locales.  It will be demonstrated through the sharing of many illustrations that posters can be a potent tool for communication and social transformation.

A Gettysburg resident, Judie is a dedicated community volunteer, former President of the Arts Council Board of Directors, and current member of Gettysburg Borough Council. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Auburn University and Masters degrees in Curriculum Design and Counseling from Auburn and Troy University.
