The Quantico Tri features a start near Officer Candidates School with a 750 meter open water swim in the Potomac River. Athletes transition to a 20.4K (12.8 mile) cycle tour of the Marine Corps Base that was founded in 1917. The Quantico Tri concludes with a 5K run, the distance every Marine must complete annually as part of the Marine Corps physical fitness test. For those desiring only to run, the MCM offers the Quantico 12K and Mile to be hosted alongside the Quantico Tri. The 12K run is a perfect distance at the perfect time in MCM training.
Swim (750m) - Triathletes will be grouped into one of six waves (first wave starting at 7:00 a.m.) to enter the Potomac River at a designated time for the swim portion of the competition. One pre-swim safety brief will be conducted at 6:40 a.m. at the swim start. Triangular buoys will mark the two turns with round, intermediate buoys present throughout the swim route to guide swimmers. The exit point of the swim will be designated by a large, inflatable "Miles" the Bulldog. When triathletes finish the swim, they will enter the transition area and proceed to their designated bicycle rack. Each triathlete’s swim time will end when they cross the timing mat located near the swim exit. Team River Runner will be providing Kayak safety support by assisting with monitoring the swim activity.
Bike (20.4K) - Please visit the course map as the bike segment has been adjusted due to road conditions. All athletes must put on their helmet and snap the strap before mounting their bike. The helmet must remain on and buckled until the triathlete completes the bike route, dismounts and racks their bike. Not following the helmet rules may result in a disqualification (DQ). Bikes may NOT be ridden in the transition area. It is important to use extreme caution when departing the transition area. It may be very congested! Participants will not be allowed to mount their bikes in the transition area and will be required to dismount at the designated spot outside the transition area. Bike times will start when triathletes depart the transition area through the 'Bike Out' chute and end when they re-enter the transition area through the 'Bike In' chute. Once the bike portion is completed, triathletes will return their bike to their designated spot in the transition area.
Run (5K) - Triathletes depart the transition area by exiting through the 'Run Out' chute. Triathletes run time will begin when they depart the transition area through the 'Run Out' chute and end when they cross the finish line.
The Quantico Tri and 12K overall winners (top three male and female) will be presented awards in a ceremony at 9:20 a.m. near the finish line. Age award and masters awards will be mailed after verifying finisher data.
The Quantico Tri and Quantico 12K will recognize first place winners in the following age groups: 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+ and be awarded at a later date.
Overall awards are based on gun time. Masters and age awards are based on chip time
