Screen Door Summer Music Festival

Screen Door Summer Music Festival

Wednesday, Aug 14, 2019 at 10:00am

Screen Door is a five-day musical extravaganza along one of the most scenic coastlines in the world. It features fresh performances by world-renowned musicians, presented in intimate venues, all in a distinctly relaxed summer-in-Maine atmosphere.

Screen Door welcomes you to vibrant variety. While you can get your Bach, Beethoven or Brahms fix at the festival, you will also experience novel, one-of-a-kind creative happenings — summer fun for audience and artists alike.

And Screen Door is a destination. Look out at Midcoast Maine’s craggy and rugged shoreline, a bay dotted with hundreds of uninhabited islands, and a crown of pined mountains. The musical venues are approachable, sometimes historic, and always New-England-beautiful. And this high-note of summer is famously laid back: Leave stodgy behind, wander around with a glass of wine and introduce yourself to the young artists who just opened their doors to you.

10:00am: Bach for Breakfast Part 1 – An Introduction

Our popular morning series this season is presented by acclaimed violinist Jennifer Koh and explores the connection between Bach’s major pieces for solo violin and our present day through juxtapositions with commissioned works by contemporary composers. Recognized for intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance, Jennifer is a forward-thinking artist dedicated to exploring a broad and eclectic repertoire, while promoting diversity and inclusivity in classical music.

Featured work in Part 1:

BACH Solo Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1005

A genre-bending blend of bluegrass, jazz, classical, and original works brought to life in a high-energy performance with a fun, welcoming stage presence. Whether playing bass on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, composing music for the Royal Shakespeare Company, or co-founding the smash hit CDZA. Thurber’s musical voice defies genre and category.

Tessa was awarded a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant and first-place in the 2012 Naumburg International Violin Competition. In their respective careers, Tessa and Michael have collaborated with some of the world’s leading musicians in a wide variety of genres – to name just a few: Mitsuko Uchida, Itzhak Perlman, and Mark O’Connor (Tessa), and Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, and CeeLo Green (Michael).
