Looking for the perfect outing for Dad for this Father's Day Join local historian, author, and lecturer W. Barry Thomson on Sunday, June 20 for a narrated hike sharing the rich and complex history of what is now the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham, beginning with the history of the rural industrial district that developed along the North Branch of the Raritan River and McVickers Brook in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Solstice Beer Hike will begin at the Nature Center where guests will take a short walk to the Brookrace Manor House, where Thomson's talk -- enhanced using archival photographs and rare maps and stops at several sites on the property -- will then cover the early 20th century development of the 600-acre "Brookrace" estate by Richard and Julia Williams, including the family's stone manor house. In 1932, following Richard Williams' death, the "Brookrace" estate was transformed into the Mortimer L. Schiff Scout Reservation, which, for the next 47 years, served as the National Training Center for the Boy Scouts of America.
Ascending back to the preserve, guests (21+, please) will be guided on a walking tour through various notable sections/highlights of the preserve until joining Head Brewer and co-owner, Tim Pewitt of Wet Ticket Brewing in Rahway, NJ in the Amphitheater for a Tasting & short talk about the brewing process and the importance of clean water and soil as the foundation for tasty beer.
Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, weather appropriate clothes, and expect that the walking portions of the Solstice Beer Hike range in time from 7-15 minute spurts and will involve some incline. This is an all-weather event except for extreme summer weather such as thunderstorms or heavy rain warnings. In the event of extreme summer weather warnings, the program will be cancelled and refunds will be issued automatically. Access to the Nature Center presents accessibility limitations. Parking is limited, so carpooling is strongly encouraged. Advance registration and payment are required 24 hours in advance.
Cost: Member fee is $40. Non- member fee is $45. Capacity is limited to 30 for this event. Masks are not required for fully vaccinated guests, but please have on hand. Unvaccinated guests are to wear masks.
