Take a Sunday stroll in the Demonstration Garden at McHenry County College with the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and learn how to make your garden a showpiece.
The MCC Demo Garden at 8900 U.S. Route 14, Crystal Lake (west of Building E), is a hidden half-acre gem and a peaceful respite. As you enjoy the garden, the Master Gardeners will give a brief presentation on gardening topics and provide useful how-to tips.
Each free monthly Sunday session — May 26, June 23, July 28 and Aug. 25 — begins at 1 p.m. and lasts about 20 minutes. Master Gardeners will teach you the “how, what and where” of each topic. These family-friendly sessions are free and suitable for all ages. No registration is required.
Dates and topics include:
May 26: Containers. Join a discussion on the beautiful containers displayed in the garden. Learn how putting together an interesting group of plants, which will grow throughout the summer, can enhance your garden.
June 23: Butterflies and Hummingbirds. Master Gardeners will discuss the plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Learn how flower nectar and bloom color attract different species of butterflies. Discover why hummingbirds like trumpet-shaped flowers.
July 28: Composting Two Ways. A compost bin is an eco-friendly way to use your kitchen vegetable scraps to fertilize your garden. Also, learn how to start a vermicomposting container with your children.
Aug. 25: Bugs — Good and Bad. Discover how “good” insects help pollinate your flowers and vegetables and which “bad” insects eat your plants.
