Curated by Gail Ingis, the exhibition entitled, The Artist’s View: Traveling the Merritt Parkway will feature new paintings by Cynthia Mullins, inspired by her road trips along the historic thoroughfare.
Connecticut artist Cynthia Mullins’ painting roots run deep, as she is the great, great granddaughter and great, great niece of renowned Hudson River School painters Aaron Draper Shattuck and Samuel Colman. Ms. Mullins has had a strong and continuous thread of art making, interest, and exposure in college, museums, and workshops focusing on pottery, pastel, and oil painting.
Cynthia Mullins’ Merritt Parkway images are painted on varied surfaces including copper, aluminum, and stainless steel hubcaps. The paintings are the culmination of her experiences and observations traveling the renowned road, with its unique and world famous overpasses.
Her work has won numerous awards, including three for her Merritt Parkway paintings. In 2008, for “Best in Show” at the Ridgefield Guild of Artists 30th Annual Exhibition, from Juror Benjamin Genocchio, then New York Times Art Critic and writer; followed by “Best in Show” in 2016 at New Canaan’s Carriage Barn Art Center’s Spectrum, Natural Inspiration; and 2nd Place in the Ridgefield Guild of Artists 40th Annual Exhibition, Award of Excellent Juried Show, 2017.
Ms. Mullins has also been filmed by the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County for their Artist’s Talk Series, 2017, and her Merritt Parkway paintings are depicted on the front and backside covers of the book, The Merritt Parkway: The Road that Shaped a Region, published by History Press and written by Laurie Hess and Jill Smyth.
