Sing for America is blessed to be able to choose from wonderful pieces of art as we decide what show we will perform. This one is near and dear to so many hearts, often reimagined from Roald Dahl’s original literature. Dahl has a way of using the dark and melancholy to give a resolve to hope and closeness with those we love, that is why we chose this story. We want to tell this story, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, of love in the face of pain, integrity in the midst of selfish ambition.

The 1971 film captured this so wonderfully and we will be using this as our springboard to reach our audience. The movie has magic and wonder that is our goal to capture, and also unsettling and a bit twisted. That is where the fun comes in, in the wildly characterized stereotypes of children and parent’s vices, the off-kilter and bewildering Willy Wonka, hopeful Candy Man, and Charlie and Grandpa Joe and Mrs. Bucket creating the chocolate center.

Did I mention the zany and ominous Oompa Loompahs? It’s a show so jam packed it is hard to express exactly how we will perform it.

This Christmas season Sing For America would like to truly make a difference for military families, help them know the community cares and make sure the kids believe as their dinner and Christmas lists are given by ‘Santa’ in the spirit of Christ…our goal is to donate $5,000 by the end of the run, with the patrons we can do that.

At the heart of Willy Wonka are sentiments that speak directly to our community where there is great wealth in our time and yet such suffering, when we window the price of everything but the value of nothing, all connected and yet so alone as things are loved and people used…all of this is explored in the characters backdropping Charlie, selfish children and parents.

Charlie’s story is real to so many in the valley and beyond, hardships leave a family alone in a world as tragedy has left Charlie’s family poor and broken but his hope presses on to triumph.
