The Peninsula Symphonic Band will honor veterans with its annual Veterans Day concert

Donations are appreciated to support Veteran Services of Door County and the Peninsula Symphonic Band.

After a year and a half absence due to the pandemic, the Peninsula Symphonic Band re-started rehearsals in June and played a concert in Sister Bay at the end of July.

In addition to a number of patriotic selections, the low brass section of the ensemble will play a special tribute to late member John Mann.

The Bone Boys, a local trombone ensemble of which Mann was a member, will also perform a couple of pieces in his honor.

'This will certainly be an emotional evening for the band members as we honor the memory of our dear friend, John Mann, a long-time member of the ensemble,' said Jason Palmer, Music Director of the Peninsula Symphonic Band.

'This year we also lost members John Koehn and Shyla Wollman.'

Memorial gifts received in memory of Joan Draeb, John Mann, John Koehn and Shyla Wollman have played a huge role in the band being able to commission a new work by nationally renowned composer Randall Standridge. The Peninsula Symphonic Band will perform the World Premiere of the new work for Veteran's Day 2023.

The Swingin' Door Big Band will enhance the program with some jazz music including 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree' featuring the band's three vocalists performing as the Andrews Sisters.

'The Peninsula Symphonic Band is a community band which welcomes high school and adult musicians,' said Palmer.

'There are no auditions. Musicians just show up and play and we have openings in all sections.'
