Joni Arnao Teaches Heart Healthy Living

All Hero Nominee AmericanTowns Hero

When Joni Arnao began having heart problems (again), the remedy was to insert a pacemaker and rather than slow her down, she used the procedure as a catalyst to make over her life and to help educate others on a heart healthy lifestyle. As a nurse, Joni knows the benefits of blood pressure screenings and the importance of good nutrition in maintaining good health. Following her heart surgery she began putting together a plan called "Healthy Family" whereby she delivers lectures on why good nutrition is so important as well as where to buy healthy food and how to prepare it. She even brings meals for tasting and offers tips and how to feed your snack attacks in the most healthy manner. Joni has also taken her message further into the community, volunteering with the local literacy program and teaching nutrition as well as educating people about the risk factors of heart disease and offering free blood pressure screenings. Plus, she recently participated in a "Go Red" benefit just five weeks after her pacemaker procedure. To reach even more people Joni and her husband started a Facebook page, called "Arnao Healthy Family" where she posts heart healthy recipes and she will be further motivating people by taking part in an upcoming Relay for Life event. Joni is an inspiration to many people for the way she is transforming her life and her health. Since the beginning of this year she has lost 83 lbs and continues to work on looking and feeling healthy, inside and out. Do you know someone who has taken a health challenge or tragedy and turned it into an opportunity to educate and help others? Nominate them for next week's AmericanTowns hero.
