Keith McVey: A mailman with a knack for saving lives

AmericanTowns Hero

Set aside the jokes about through rain and sleet and snow, Keith McVey is a mailman who saves lives while out on his route and then continues delivering the mail!In total, Keith McVey has responded to screams for help from three people while carrying out his daily duties as a postal worker. In all three cases he proved to be a lifesaver. The first person McVey saved, close to 20 years ago, was a young man who jumped off a pedestrian bridge into a snowbank. Two years ago, after saving a 13-year-old girl drowning in a lake, McVey went back to delivering the mail. When asked why he didn’t call it a day, he said it hadn’t really occurred to him, but more importantly, "Because if I didn't finish up, they'd have to take all my mail back," he said. "I didn't want anybody to have to pick up my slack."Wow! What a humble guy. But that’s how AmericanTowns Heroes are. They don’t see themselves as doing anything the next guy wouldn’t do in the same situation. Recently, McVey had a chance to put his CPR training to use and save another life when he was summoned to aid a man who was not breathing. McVey managed the chest compressions for several minutes while another bystander felt for a pulse. "Pretty soon the woman said, 'I've got a pulse, I've got a pulse,'" he said. "And shortly after that, he started breathing on his own."When asked if he thinks what has happened to him is about timing or coincidence, McVey says, "I'm not sure, but after three times, I'm beginning to think there might be a little divine intervention of some sort. It is kind of eerie," he said. Eerie or not, Keith McVey is one guy the community is happy to have around, even if the mail is a bit late every so often.
