Kendall Harvey Crafts Custom Bikes for Special Kids

AmericanTowns Hero

Kendall Harvey was considering going back to work to beat the boredom of retirement when he met up with a little boy with Down's syndrome. When he asked the boy if he had a bicycle he found out the little boy was not capable of riding around on a two-wheeler, which gave Kendall an idea. After finding out a bit more about the child he went to his home workshop and built the boy a three-wheel bike he could ride. And that was just the beginning. After 10 years and about 150 bikes, Kendall is going to have to retire due to his health issues, but he is still a hero to many children and their families for the time and trouble he took to build them custom bikes they could ride like the other kids. Kendall has the pictures and the letters and the memories of hugs and smiles from all the grateful children he built bikes for. And he did it all for free, never charging a cent for his creations. When word spread about what he was doing he found himself the recipient of donations of bicycles, parts and supplies. To those donated bicycles and scraps he mixed his time and considerable skills with plenty of TLC. Each bike lovingly made by hand to suit the unique needs of each child. Thank you, Kendall. Do you know someone who gives their time and effort to help others? Someone who takes the gifts they've been given and uses them to help those less fortunate? Nominate them for next week's AmericanTowns hero.
