Nat Henry is a Hero Who Serves Community and Country

All Hero Nominee AmericanTowns Hero

Nathan B. Henry is one of those rare individuals who doesn't like to use his status as a war hero to his advantage. After returning to his hometown after close to six years in captivity during the Vietnam War, he shunned the spotlight and quietly went to work. Over the years he has been credited with being the charter member of an organization dedicated to helping local veterans, including serving two terms as its president. Henry has worked over the years to make life better for veterans and was even instrumental in having a national day of honor set aside for all Vietnam Veterans. Henry is himself a recipient of two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf Clusters, among other medals for his service. After returning home, Henry found time to finish college with a degree in horticulture and was the original member of the towns volunteer fire department, working hard to secure funding for its construction. In wanting to honor Henry's service to his country and his community it was decided that a bridge would be named in his honor, while he is still alive, to thank him for his many selfless contributions. When he was approached about the honor he said he didn't want it, feeling that he should not be singled out for his service, but the town's commissioner who sponsored the project pushed to get something in place to celebrate his contributions while he is still active. The commissioner noted that there are only two bridges in the state named for Medal Of Honor winners, one being the Blue Star Highway dedicated to all veterans and now the Nathan B. Henry bridge dedicated to someone who dedicated his life to helping veterans. After the ceremony, Henry was grateful for the recognition and remarked to the crowd assembled to honor him that “It is hard to stand here today and put into words the love, and respect I have for Macon County,” said Henry. “When I came back to Western North Carolina I always said this is God's country.” Do you know someone who works tirelessly to honor the commitment of others? Nominate them for next week's AmericanTown's Hero.
