Dr. Pamela Cantor has been nationally recognized for her efforts to help improve the lives of children and families. She is a child psychiatrist who has been focusing on child trauma for more than 20 years. While the word trauma brings to mind major negative events, what she has found over the years is that the daily effects of poverty in children's lives has more of an impact than single traumatic events.Working with this insight she developed a plan for turning failing schools into functioning schools. Her non-profit organization called Turnaround for Children has worked with dozens of schools in high poverty areas to affect change with a three-step approach:* Create teams to study and understand the needs of the children who are challenged both academically and emotionally.* Deliver services on site with the help of social workers and local mental health agencies.* Improve skills of the teachers and administrators to help them better manage the variety of children under their care.Dr. Cantor feels her approach can be implemented in every high poverty school in the country to help give children the chance they deserve to use school as a way to a brighter future for themselves and their families.
