Special Spaces: Helps Kids Heal

AmericanTowns Hero

Special Spaces is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide children fighting life threatening illnesses with their own special dream bedroom that will give them a place to find peace and comfort while addressing their medical needs. It takes a village … as the saying goes and people with talents and time from all corners of the community come together to design, create and decorate a unique bedroom for each child chosen to be granted their wish. For a recent project, all hands were on deck to make a very special bedroom for a very special young girl. Once the project was given the green light, calls were made and people showed up to do their part. The local lumber company donated materials and volunteers arrived at the house to do the framing. Others stepped in to do the dry wall and trim. One person did the wiring for the lighting and another the painting. A generous family donated money they would have spent on each other for Christmas gifts, so that supplies could be purchased and many others chipped in to build furniture, sew slipcovers and provide other handmade finishing touches. The director of Special Spaces, Lacy Gambill gives credit to all the many volunteers who "jumped on board and were willing to help in every way possible.” The end result is a special space for a special girl. Do you know someone who donates their time and energy to ease the discomfort of others? Nominate them for next week's AmericanTown's Hero.
