QWOCMAP presents the FREE 19th annual International Queer Women of Color Film Festival in San Francisco.

From the lush sageness of memory, movement, and Indigenous traditions of environmental stewardship, to the transformation of grief, and the mycorrhizal relationships between love, collective care, and disability justice, the Festival Focus “Forever Rooted” liberates spores of sovereignty and survivance.

All films are Subtitled for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and Audio Described for the Blind and Low Vision, and ASL interpretation will be provided along with many other forms of accessibility.

7:00pm: Opening Night Screening - MAGIC AT THE ROOT

Grounded firmly in resourcefulness and strength, from habitats of healing anchored in the arts, and young queer people of color tending to their wellbeing, to community that dismantles and remediates the cishetero-capitalist-white supremacist-patriarchy, these films dive into networks of consciousness and nurture hope for our communities to flourish.

1:00pm: GINGER & HONEY MILK

This human drama traces the lives of four university students amid pandemic isolation in Japan, some of whom are Deaf and fluent in Japanese Sign Language, and others who are hearing and learning JSL.

Created by a Deaf and nonbinary Japanese filmmaker, this tender film sheds light on the language gap between Deaf and hearing communities, and the intersectional challenges that queer and Deaf people face while navigating love and relationships.

3:00pm: UNSEEN

unseen, by queer and undocumented filmmaker Set Hernandez, follows Pedro, a blind, undocumented immigrant, and aspiring social worker as he faces a number of barriers to obtain his college degree, secure a job, and support his family. The film reveals Pedro's dedicated journey to provide mental health care for his community and his personal path of perseverance and healing. Pedro's remarkable perspective as he overcomes grief, frustration, and untimely setbacks, guides others within his community to pursue their dreams and emerge from hardship triumphantly.

Beyond the personal story it conveys, unseen explores the intersections of disability, immigration, and mental health. The film serves as a model for accessible storytelling and contributes to building a world that is more just for disabled and undocumented people.

5:00pm: Panel: Disability Justice in Film

Join us for a conversation to explore the ways disability justice and accessibility transform how we make, engage with, and create change through film. The panel will follow two feature films that push the craft of filmmaking and how we understand ableism: Ginger & Honey Milk by Deaf Japanese filmmaker Mika Imai; and unseen by Set Hernandez, about an aspiring social worker who is a blind, undocumented immigrant.

Clusters of intimacy and loving connection, from abundant queer Black love intertwined with grief, to a celestial romance and Latinx and South Asian women coming of age, the vibrant fruiting bodies of these films exude queer joy and community.

We are thrilled to invite you to bring your family into the Presidio to celebrate Pride month and enjoy fresh air and sunshine with other queer and transgender people of color families.

It’s so important to us that queer and transgender families are able to be in community and join us at our 19th annual International Queer Women of Color Film Festival. We’ve also partnered with Our Family Coalition to provide FREE childcare during each screening.

1:00pm: WIND SOWN MEMORY

From transgender elders and young queer people of color who cultivate courage and change, to queer families seeking safety and connection, these films are a web of kinship and community, testament to the ways we survive with sweetness and choose to love ourselves and each other.

5:00pm: MYCELIAL CARE

From restorative Oaxacan food and traditions that nourish community, to Indigenous activism and environmental stewardship, these films are the connective filaments that transmute what doesn’t work to fuel our collective healing and liberation.
