Join us for the ADAA Upper East Side Gallery Walk Saturday, November 5, 2022

Please join us on Saturday, November 5, 3–5 p.m., for the ADAA Upper East Side Gallery Walk. We are pleased to be featuring a selection of fine works by three kindred spirits: Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956), Mark Tobey (1890–1976), and Piero Dorazio (1927–2005).

Feininger and Tobey were good friends, who found conceptual sympathy in each other’s work. “His highly sensitive technique captures something of the fleeting values of our life,” Feininger wrote of Tobey for a Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Oregon, exhibition catalogue in 1945. Tobey returned the compliment in 1954, in an essay for a Feininger exhibition catalogue published by the Curt Valentin Gallery, New York: “[Feininger] does not abstract for abstraction’s sake. He draws the essence from the real, reshapes and relates in color, form and line-and gives us his world wherein, if we have the willing mind, and take the time, we are rewarded by becoming more aware, and more sensitive within ourselves.”

Dorazio, a central figure in the avant-garde, had a wide circle of artist friends and acquaintances, including Tobey. Committed to the primacy of color in painting, he embarked on a long series of works based on a subtle mesh of linear hues, woven and crosshatched into a dense unity. His work pulses with frenzied, luminous line and color, corralled into impeccably ordered compositions. Both he and Tobey explored allover painting, filling the surfaces of their work from edge to edge.

We are presenting our gallery walk exhibition in conjunction with our online viewing room at the IFPDA Print Fair Fall 2022. Our viewing room-a bespoke interactive virtual space-will be available until Thursday, November 17.
