Ghosts of Gold Mountain by Gordon H. Chang

Ghosts of Gold Mountain tells the story of workers from southern China’s Guangdong province, their journey to the gold fields of Northern California and their work building the United States’ first transcontinental railroad line in the mid-nineteenth century. Chang digs deep into archival and archeological records to present a detailed reconstruction of the monumental challenges the workers faced as well as scenes from their day to day lives. This book emphasizes the humanity and agency of the Chinese railroad workers during their struggle against the difficult peaks of the Sierra Nevada, as well as their efforts to organize and improve their working conditions.
