American Red Cross News - January 2024

Clubs and Organizations

January 10, 2024

Even though the climate crisis is making our winters warmer on average, winter storms, extreme cold and ice are still a threat for many communities.

Severe winter storms continue to be a huge danger to families across the country, as they disrupt transportation, heat, power and communication. But the good news is that taking time to prepare yourself and your loved ones now can save lives tomorrow.

- Gather food, water, medicine and batteries for your devices before a storm.

- Be mindful of the fire risk of candles and space heaters, and watch out for carbon monoxide poisoning from generators and stoves!

- You can check out the rest of our winter safety tips here!

As always, we welcome you to make a donation to the American Red Cross to help us assist families impacted by emergencies like winter storms in the months ahead.

Emergency Communications Services Help Reunite Soldier, Wife for Birth of First Child

Madi was admitted to the hospital in early April with all the warning signs of pre-eclampsia — a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure. She was to be induced in 24 hours, two weeks before her husband, Jonathan King, was scheduled to go on leave from his deployment in South Korea.

After Jonathan received the news that his daughter would be arriving early, his mother set Red Cross Emergency Communications services into motion to get him home in time to be with his wife. Thanks to the Red Cross Hero Care Network, Jonathan made it home just in time for the birth of his first child, Harriet.

Train for Moments That Matter

Each year, the month of January provides us with an important opportunity for reflection and renewal. This year, I find myself incredibly optimistic about the amazing things we can accomplish together in the months ahead.

For more than 140 years, compassionate and caring individuals like you have made sure the Red Cross is there for people when they need it most. And while it’s impossible for us to know what this new year will bring, I’m certain we can be prepared for whatever challenges we’ll face by working together. That’s why, if you’re able, I encourage you to make a donation to the Red Cross to help power our lifesaving work.

As always, thank you for your ongoing dedication to our vital mission. On behalf of everyone at the Red Cross, I wish you the very best for much happiness and health in 2024.
