Andreas Feininger Photographs Exhibition at Lempertz, Cologne and Berlin

Dear Friends,

I’m pleased to announce a collaboration between Lempertz and Moeller Fine Art, in partnership with the Feininger estate, to present Andreas Feininger Photographs. This exhibition is an extension of the historic Lyonel Feininger retrospective at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. It features 70 photographs by Feininger's oldest son, Andreas Feininger (1906–1999), including his iconic compositions as well as rarely exhibited works. The exhibition will be on view at Lempertz in Cologne from March 9 to April 6, 2024, and in Berlin from May 28 to June 21, 2024.

Andreas initially trained as an architect. In 1927, he built a darkroom in the basement of the Feininger family’s master house at the Bauhaus, Dessau. Photography soon became a passion for him, his brothers T. Lux and Laurence, and their father. In 1928, the Berlin photo agency DEPHOT began representing Andreas, and, one year later, his accomplished photographs were shown alongside those of László Moholy-Nagy and Hugo Erfurth in the Film und Foto exhibition of the Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart.

After moving to Sweden in 1933, Andreas became more seriously involved with photography. He began publishing books about the medium and continued to work as a professional photographer after he immigrated to the United States in 1939. In the early 1950s, he initiated a series of portraits of various professionals with the tools of their fields, as in The Photojournalist, 1951, his portrait of the young photojournalist Dennis Stock. Andreas became best known for his city, landscape, and nature photographs, which were frequently published in LIFE, where he served as a staff photographer from 1943 to 1962.

Andreas Feininger Photographs offers a unique opportunity to see the range and precision of his remarkable body of work.
