Hello art lovers!

Thanks to everyone who made it to our first quarterly Artists Meet-Up at Threes Brewing last week. We had a blast! See a few photos below.

Meet the jurors for Pride: All Day, Every Day below and submit artwork for the exhibition's open call. And don't forget to get your tickets for the 2024 Patterns Gala!

INTRODUCING THE JURORS FOR "PRIDE: ALL DAY, EVERY DAY"

In honor of Pride month, Arts Gowanus is once again partnering with Brooklyn Pride and The Old Stone House & Washington Park to present an outdoor art exhibition called Pride: All Day, Every Day.

The exhibit will feature artwork – selected from an open call – by emerging and established Brooklyn-based LGBTQIA+ artists working in various styles and media. The works will depict and celebrate what “pride” means to the artist and/or Brooklyn’s LGBTQIA+ community.

All works will be printed on 36” x 36” vinyl banners and will include a brief description of the piece. The banners will be displayed on the fence surrounding The Old Stone House & Washington Park and J.J. Byrne Playground in Park Slope from June 1 – August 31, 2024.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide a platform for more than 100 Queer artists to display their artwork proudly and publicly,” said Emily Chiavelli, Program Director for Arts Gowanus. “We hope this exhibition not only brings attention to the complex experience of living as a Queer person, both now and historically, but also serves as a way to celebrate the immense joy, care, and incredible creativity that makes these artists such an indispensable part of the artistic community, and the community at large, here in Brooklyn.”

Eight amazing Brooklynites will serve as jurors and select the final works for the exhibition.

Carter Shocket - artist, curator & gallery manager of Eleventh Hour Art

Diana Ho - Founder & Owner of From Here to Sunday

Erica Morales - artist, curator & educator

Mike FIeni - Director of Community Engagement for Brooklyn Public Library & lead of BPL's Pride Month programming

Saskia Scheffer - photographer & coordinator at Lesbian Herstory Archives

Traci Johnson - textile, installation & sculptural artist

Victoria J - small business owner & coordinator for Brooklyn Pride's Youth Pride celebrations

Vivien - founder of Park Slope Living

PURCHASE TICKETS TO THE 2024 PATTERNS GALA!

Our third annual Patterns Gala is scheduled for Thursday, May 9 (6-9:30pm) at The Old Stone House! Once again, all attendees are strongly encouraged to wear the craziest patterns they can! Come and enjoy art, food, drinks, live music, raffles, and more.

Please purchase a ticket to the Gala or consider sponsoring the event. Your support will help raise much needed funds that will allow us to continue our important community-building work. Arts Gowanus is committed to utilizing art as a catalyst to build deeper community relationships and a more equitable neighborhood.

Arts Gowanus is a not-for-profit organization working to support, promote, and advocate for local artists and a sustainable arts community in Brooklyn. We nurture relationships among individual artists, arts organizations, local businesses, and the community. We produce open studio events, public art works, professional development workshops, artistic collaborations, and exhibitions in our mission to ensure artists remain a crucial part of the neighborhood's identity.

PLEASE HELP US CONTINUE OUR WORK!

Full transparency -- Arts Gowanus is struggling financially. We’ve finally taken the necessary step to add another team member to help with our expanded programming and our forthcoming stewardship of subsidized studio spaces, however our shoestring budget is being stretched to its limit. We have BIG PLANS for programming in 2024! Funds raised at our Patterns Gala will help us #keepgowanuscreative!

OPEN CALL: POINTS OF PROMISE

Launched by Van Alen Institute in 2023, Points of Promise is a multiyear initiative to create public art and design tools that support civic engagement and foster connection among Gowanus residents in the midst of significant neighborhood redevelopment.

For the next Points of Promise installation in Fall 2024, Van Alen is currently seeking artists and designers to help increase public awareness of the evolving risk and impact of flooding in Gowanus. The project seeks fresh ideas for community engagement in order to provide Gowanus residents with new, enriching ways to stay informed about issues shaping the neighborhood.

Deadline for Applications: Friday, April 26, 2024
