Our Wild Summer of Murals is Coming to an End!

Arts Gowanus' summer of murals is winding down. Artist Hannah Robinett is currently wrapping up her mural on Union Street, at 3rd Avenue. It looks fantastic! This is the seventh, and final, mural of our summer-long mural project.

All summer, as part of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs' City Canvas Program, Arts Gowanus collaborated with ArtBridge, The Domain Companies, and Tavros Charney in covering the green fences surrounding construction sites around the neighborhood with vibrant artwork. Take a stroll around the neighborhood and see if you can spot all of our murals! Click here for a map.

Many thanks to the artists who collaborated with us on this project: John Azelvandre, David Barthold, Emily Chiavelli, Liza Domingues, Demarcus McGaughey, Hannah Robinett, and Johnny Thornton!

And special thanks to our mural installation team: Ward Yoshimoto, Miguel Reyes, Izzi Penn Sweet, Tiziana Mazziotto, Nick Maggiore, Jon Bunge, Joshua Goodridge, and Nicole Kizuk. It was a blast working with all of you!

Opening Thursday, September 7 at 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue

440 Gallery is proud to present The Elements, an exhibition of abstract, monochrome works by Fred Bendheim. For his sixth solo show at the gallery, Bendheim has continued to explore his passion for shaped paintings, as he has done for the past 15 years. While his primary medium is shaped, painted PVC board, he has included two works on wood and aluminum.

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 9, 4-6pm

Opening Friday, September 8 at Open Source Gallery, 306 17th Street

Open Source Gallery is pleased to present Valley of Unity, a project by Tahir Karmali.

Valley of Unity is based on a passage from Attar of Nishapur’s The Conference of the Birds, in which the Sufi poet describes a valley where all our outlines dissolve and we become indistinguishable from each other. The poem highlights how our journeys in the search of peace and meaning are unique yet the destination is the same. Valley of Unity will consist of a series of steel sheets resting at varying angles that represent a valley with 4 bass shakers/resonators on each turning them into speakers. The sound will be sourced from national borderlines and mixed to create a slightly more palatable musical experience.

Opening Reception: Friday, September 8
