While New Mexico Democrats Keep our State a Safe Haven for Abortion, Republicans Seek to Eliminate Rights and Freedoms

Today, the Supreme Court began to hear arguments in a case that could ban medication abortion across the country and severely limit access to critical reproductive care for millions. The Democratic Party of New Mexico released the following statement: 

“Today’s Supreme Court hearing is a stark reminder that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are using every avenue possible to ban abortion nationwide and devastate reproductive freedom. This case could strip away access to medication abortion everywhere in this country, including New Mexico, which would be the biggest step toward their extreme goal since Trump overturned Roe v. Wade. New Mexicans know that reproductive rights are on the ballot in November, and the only way to protect our rights is to send President Biden and Vice President Harris back to the White House.”

New Mexico proudly remains a safe haven for abortion and reproductive rights. While Republicans like Yvette Herrell and Nella Domenici oppose rights to essential abortion care, New Mexican Democrats have put our state at the forefront of protecting these freedoms. 

Currently, abortion access in New Mexico remains protected because of the actions taken by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democratic leaders in our state legislature to overturn New Mexico’s outdated abortion ban in 2021, which preemptively protected abortion access in our state before the Dobbs decision. In 2023, New Mexico Democrats enshrined into law House Bill 7, which prevents municipalities from placing restrictions on reproductive health care and abortion, and Senate Bill 13, prohibiting entities in New Mexico from sharing patient information related to reproductive health care to keep patients and providers safe from other states that would seek to punish them for receiving this critical care in our state. 

To keep these protections in place here in New Mexico and across the country, we must continue to elect Democrats, from the White House to Roundhouse. President Biden and Vice President Harris will protect a woman’s right to choose and all reproductive health care rights by:

- Calling on Congress to codify the protections of Roe into law, restoring rights women relied on for nearly 50 years.

- Standing by the FDA’s evidence-based approval of mifepristone — and the Biden-Harris administration will continue to defend the FDA’s independent, expert authority to review, approve, and regulate a wide range of prescription drugs.

- Fightingto ensure access to emergency medical care.

- Strengtheningpatient privacyand ensuring access to all forms ofcontraception.

- Supporting a woman’s right to travel for medical care.

- Promisingto veto a national abortion ban.
