Avanti Senior Living at Towne Lake believes that generations of seniors and children of all ages have a lot to learn from each other. Wanting to bridge the gap between the generations, team members at the Towne Lake community planned two special events for this holiday season. The first event was called "Christmas Chicks," for which Avanti invited children from Foundations Academy to learn alongside the residents.
Special guests Mike and Nicole Graham set up an incubator with chicken eggs and led an educational presentation on the life cycle of chickens. In addition, the children interacted with baby chicks. Mike and Nicole also taught them that we are essentially eating whatever we feed our chickens, which demonstrated the nutritional importance of making sure the animals we eat are fed well. The eggs will stay at the community until they hatch on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Some of the residents grew up on farms and were able to share their life experiences with the children.
The second event was a food demonstration presented by culinary students from Cy-Fair High School. The kids led a cookie decorating class in which they brought advanced decorating tools to show residents elaborate techniques that turn delectable sugar cookies into vibrant masterpieces. The students and seniors used fondant, icing of different textures and creative detail to beautify the cookies.
